The paper put forward the idea of optimizing spatial patterns of land-use by incorporating the main ecological processes. With the aid of GIS and on the basis of simulating main ecological and hydrological processes, the land-use MCR(Minimum Cumulative Resistance) model was developed and the approaches to analyzing optimal spatial patterns of land-use were discussed. The case study by applying the MCR model was conducted on the KaoKaoLaiGou river basin of Erdos plateau in semi-arid area in Inter-Mongolia, China, where was seriously threatened by soil erosion and desertification problems. The paper finally suggested the possible best land-use patterns specific for the area, including farming lands, woodlands and pasture lands.
