The second Mineral Dust and Tropospheric Chemistry (MINATROC) field campaign took place at the Meteorological Observatory of Izana, Tenerife (28degrees 18'N - 16degrees 30' W, 2397 m asl) between July 15 and August 15, 2002. The Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC-CNR) participated in this EU campaign deploying the Vehicle-mounted Lidar System (VELIS) and a MICROTOPS sunphotometer. Saharan dust conditions were encountered during most of the observational period. In particular three intense events were recorded. In this paper we present aerosol observations made by the polarization-sensitive VELIS lidar and the MICROTOPS sunphotometer in the period July 20 - August 15, 2002. We also compare the principal optical proper-ties of Saharan dust as observed at Izana (i.e., near the desert dust source region) with the measurements made during the first MINATROC campaign (Mt. Cimone, Italy) when Saharan dust was observed to mix with pollution aerosols.
