The Salton Sea Database Program is a congressional funded project to establish a watershed-scale GIS database to facilitate decision-making regarding proposed engineering alternatives to restore the Sea. The fundamental problems involve rising salinity, elevation control, and eutrophication. Engineering alternatives include salt concentration and removal, pumping corridors to the ocean to open up the closed basin system, treatment wetlands, fish harvesting to remove organic biomass and nutrients, and combinations of these alternatives.
