Cost-effective remediation of high fluoride groundwaters is urgently needed to eliminate fluorosis which is the most widespread endemic disease in China. Three types of Cenozoic soils have been collected in situ, heat-treated and then used as fluoride-removing adsorbents in column experiments on water samples from Xinzhou. Hydraulic conductivity (K) and working exchange capacity (WEC) measurements and fluoride removal experiments under static and dynamic conditions show that one of these soil materials, the Cenozoic red soil after 400 degrees C heat-treatment is a permeable and powerful specific adsorbent for fluoride with K values between 0.05 and 0.11cm/s and WEC between 89.10 and 147.61mg/kg.
