This paper describes the design of a simulation environment that is being developed for experiments with intelligent autonomous systems. It will explain how a flexible communication layer provides the tools for dynamically connecting software modules in network wide processes, for exchanging information between them and for synchronising them. It will describe the definition of a virtual world and will show how, using the tools provided by the communication layer, software modules can be used and/or implemented that change, move and observe objects in the virtual world. The design is presented through the treatment of a sample experiment.
