Field measurements made in the Chambal Command Area in Kota, India were used to predict the cumulative field scale effects of water management practices using DRAINMOD-S, a water management model for irrigated arid lands. Long term salinity reclamation, salt loading and crop production were predicted with DRAINMOD-S using input parameters that were confirmed for short term observations.


The long term predictions were used to determine design parameters that would lead to optimal water table control and salinity reclamation through the effects of irrigation timing and subsurface drain installation. This methodology provides a valuable tool to assist in determining drainage design criteria to meet management objectives for sustainable agricultural production in arid and semi-arid regions around the world.
