The DAIS7915 Peyne experiment: Using airborne imaging spectrometry for surveying minerals in vegetated and fragmented Mediterranean landscapes

An experimental flight was carried out in July of 1997 with the Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer DAIS over the Peyne test area in southern France. The experiment was financed by DLR Oberpfaffenhofen and the EU Large Scale Facility Project. The Peyne catchment is one of the research sites of the EU DeMon project. Within this project a multi-disciplinary team of researchers is investigating the possibilities of earth observation techniques and geographical information systems for surveying and modelling land degradation processes in the Mediterranean part of the European Union. The objectives of the DAIS experimental flight were to assess the technical performance of DAIS and to investigate the possibilities of DAIS spectroscopic images to map soil types, soil properties and rock types in this complex Mediterranean area. Methods developed for desert-like conditions such as the Nevada desert were applied in this study and tested on their applicability in more vegetated and fragmented landscapes. This paper presents and discusses first results. Results show that very good maps of mineral abundance can be produced for sparsely vegetated areas and spectrally unique rocks such as bauxite and dolomite, but that it is far more difficult to obtain satisfactory results for spectrally less unique rocks such as basalt and schists in more vegetated areas.
