Hanshan, a large, newly discovered gold deposit, is hosted in deformed Ordovician basaltic - andesitic volcanic rocks. The ores in the deposit can be divided into yellow weathering gossan and ductile shear zone types. Primary mineralization and alteration in the deposit spatially exhibit apparent zoning of dense auriferous sericite quartz stockwork zone, quartz vein zone and microcrystalline sericite quartz zone from the center outwards. Stable isotope data is compatible with magmatic source for the ore-forming fluids. Due to arid climate since the Tertiary,the gold-bearing gossan mainly consists of jarosite, gypsum, and relict quartz.
