Effects of nutrient addition during bioventing of fuel contaminated soils in an arid environment

A pilot-scale bioventing demonstration combined with irrigation has been in progress at a Crash Fire Rescue (CFR) training facility at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC), in Twentynine Palms, California since July 1994. The objective was to determine if increased soil moisture content enhanced the biodegradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in arid sandy soils. Microcosms provided evidence that soil at 34 to 39 ft (10.4 to 11.9 m) below ground surface (bgs) at the bioventing site was nutrient limited. A commercial nutrient product, Oil Spill Eater II(R) (OSE II(R)), was injected into the vadose zone at the site to evaluate the effect of nutrient addition in the field. After nutrient injection, in situ respiration tests provided evidence that microbial respiration was increased in the deeper soil over historical respiratory data.
