A procedure is described for carrying out a regional analysis of convective storms over an area of 625 km(2) surrounding the metropolitan area of Mendoza City (central west Argentina). A dense hydrometeorological telemetric network of 24 stations over the area allowed detailed studies of depth-duration-frequency and time and space distribution of precipitation to be undertaken. A total of 140 network recorded storms during 12 years of operation and many other historical storms from the National Weather Service records were used to generate a composite record for a meteorologically homogeneous region. A method is described for defining homogeneous zones and finally tables for design storms are presented to use in precipitation runoff models which take into account time-space distribution and depth-duration-frequency for the convective storms of the region.
