英文摘要Located between Tibetan Plateau and the sub-continent of India, the central Himalayas(27°57'N-30°30'N, 81°07'E-88°54'E) is sensitive to climatic and environmental variations because climate in this region is dominated by Indian Monsoon in summer and by the westerly cyclonic activity in winter. Owing to the high altitude, high accumulation rate and low temperature, this region is favorable for the preservation of ice core records with high resolution and fidelity, which provides luxuriant information about the climatic and environmental changes. Under the background of global warming, glaciers have widespread retreated and some changes maybe taken place in the circulation of Indian Monsoon in this region. The central Himalayas will be a hotspot region in the prediction of future global climate change. From May 1998 to June 2000, three expeditions have been carried out in the Mount Everest (86°55'E, 27°59'N, 8848 m a.s.l.) region. 75 samples of precipitation were collected at the terminal moraine of the East Rongbuk glacier (5140m a.s.l.) from June 18 to September 29, 1998. 49 fresh snow samples (from August 30 to September 9, 1998 and June 4 to June 13, 199.9, respectively) and 107 samples from 6 snow pits were collected in accumulation zone (6250m a.s.l. to 6500m a.s.l.). In September 1998, an 80.36m ice core was also recovered in accumulation zone of the East Rongbuk Glacier on the northern slope of Mount Everest. The ice core was dated by seasonal variations of 5 1SO (measured by Mat-Plus gas isotopic mass spectrograph with precision of 0.5 %\
