英文摘要A theoretical explanation is proposed which explains the experimentally observed peak in carbon deposition from carbon monoxide at 500 deg C on iron surfaces. This explanation requires that gas equilibria in the Fe-H2-H2O-CO-CO2 system permit reduction of surface oxide and formation of a catalytically active carbide. The H2:H2O ratio and the partial pressure of H2O are the critical parameters. Experimental results are presented which show that carbon deposition rates on mild steel surfaces can be high enough to merit careful consideration in the design of HTGCR鈥檚. Results of the metallurgical examination of steel specimens subjected to carbon deposition conditions at 500 deg C are given. (auth)
