英文摘要Modern word processing applications are still stuck in the era of the printed page. Despite advances in computing power and storage, the digital files they produce seldom carry more information than what is needed to accurately produce a paper document—fonts, formatting and layout rules, pagination, etc. As a result, academic institutions, libraries and archival services are forced to reproduce key pieces of information like the author's name, the date of publication, subject matter and citation data from unstructured document text. This thesis proposes a method for providing authors the tools they need to preserve valuable metadata during document creation, by combining today's powerful word processing features with open web standards.
