Based on the characteristics of ecosystem in the Tarim River Basin and concept of ecosystem health, the index system of ecosystem health assessment was developed by using analytical hierarchy process, and the health of ecosystem was evaluated by using fuzzy mathematics calculation model. The index system had 4 layers, including aim, item, factor and index. The criterion for the assessment indices of ecosystem health was confirmed by expert advisory method. Combining the measure data, the results of field survey and relative statistical yearbook in 2006, the subjection degree of the four elements and their subjection degrees to health levels were calculated. The results showed that: 1) the limiting factors that influenced eco-health in mountainous areas in the Tarim River Basin were system structure and ecosystem service function. The subjection degree of ecosystem service function to health state was 1, while that of system structure was close to 1. System structure influenced eco-health in plain-oasis areas with the subjection degree of 1. System structure and ecosystem service function influenced eco-health in desert areas with the subjection degree of 0.85. 2) The desert ecosystems of Hetian, Yarkant, Aksu and Kaidu-konqi River Basin, and the lower reaches of Tarim River were unhealthy; while the ecosystems in mountainous areas and plain-oasis areas of the four headstreams as well as the upper and middle reaches of Tarim River were "healthy". 3) The subjection degrees of ecosystems in mountainous areas of four headstreams to health were sorted as: Hetian River Basin>Aksu River Basin>Kaidu-konqi River Basin>Yarkant River Basin; while that of ecosystems in plain-oasis areas were sorted as: Yarkant River Basin>Hetian River Basin>Aksu River Basin>Kaidu-konqi River Basin; and that of ecosystems in desert areas to unhealthy were sorted as: Yarkant River Basin>Aksu River Basin>Hetian River Basin>Kaidu-konqi River Basin. 4) It is comparatively easier to restore the eco-environment in mountainous areas and plain-oasis areas of four headstreams as well as the upper and middle reaches of Tarim River, but this is more difficult in desert areas of four headstreams and the lower reaches of Tarim River. These results can provide scientific basis for comprehensive ecological treatment in the Tarim River Basin. Ecosystem health assessment model, which was built by using fuzzy mathematics calculation model, was simple and practical in the Tarim River Basin. The index weight of ecosystem health assessment confirmed that using analytical hierarchy process was exact. The combination of two methods improved the validity of the assessment results, but it is only an attempt in ecosystem health assessment in the Basin. The questions of indices selection and criterion confirmation need further studying.
