英文摘要	Urumqi （42°45＇32＂-44°08＇00＂N, 86°37＇33＂-88°58＇24＂E） is located in the northern piedmont of the Tianshan Mountains and the southern marginal zone of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang. In Urumqi it belongs to the moderate-temperate continental arid climate, the annual, extremely maximum and minimum temperatures are 6.4 ℃, 40.6 ℃and -41.5 ℃ respectively, the frost-free period varies in a range of 150-190 days, and the annual precipitation and evaporation are 236 mm 2 300 mm respectively. Soil in Urumqi is dominated by gray-brown desert soil. Urumqi is a typical oasis city, its three sides are surrounded by mountains, its terrain slopes northward, its administrative area and urban area are 1.08 10^6 hm^2 and 1.69 10^4 hm^2 respectively, and its population is 2082000. The foundation of urban afforestation is unsubstantial due to the limitation of environmental conditions and the social and economic development. In this paper, the actual situation and development trend of the greenbelt systems in Urumqi are comprehensively analyzed based on the investigated and statistical data during the period of 1999 - 2003. The results show that there are some problems in the construction of greenbelts in Urumqi, such as the low proportion of greenbelts in urban area, imbalance of greenbelt types, irrational spatial distribution of gardens and greenbelts, scarcity in endemic species and biodiversity, and irrational structure of greenbelts. According to the state criterions of urban gardens and greenbelts, the afforestation coverage and greenbelt coverage in Urumqi are 10.78% and 8.71% lower than the state criterions. These problems must be considered in the construction of greenbelts in Urumqi.
