英文摘要 | Among different environmental stresses, drought is the abiotic factor that limits crop productivity the most. Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) is the second most popular spice in the world and an important medicinal plant in Iran. Drought-tolerant cumin cultivars could serve as an alternative spring sown crop in semi-arid areas. In this study, 20 local Iranian cumin ecotypes originating from Azarbaijan, Fars, Isfahan, Kerman, Semnan, Yazd, Northern, Razavi and Southern Khorasan provinces were grown under controlled (laboratory and pot) conditions at the Dryland Agricultural Research Institute (DART) of Iran. Seed germination and seedling growth were assessed under controlled conditions. Drought stress was simulated by using polyethylene glycol (PEG). Relative drought tolerance of seedlings was evaluated in a greenhouse by controlling the moisture content in pots. PEG-induced osmotic stress resulted in significant differences in germination between ecotypes. There was considerable variation in some morpho-physiological growth parameters in the greenhouse. Ecotypes from Kerman, Razavi Khorasan and Semnan provinces were more drought-tolerant than the remaining 17 ecotypes, and may be suitable for cultivation in drought-stressed areas. This data set will be useful for the development of drought-tolerant cumin cultivars. |
