英文摘要 | Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC., (Mesquite or Desert date), is a rapidly invasive plant used as feed supplement for ruminant animals owing to its in vitro digestibility (IVD). IVD is indicative of feed solubility but not the effect on fermentative digestion. This study highlighted anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) present in the juliflora, and their fermentation kinetics compared to IVD using anaerobic inoculum from sheep rumen. Twigs, leaves, green fruits and dry pods of P. juliflora were significantly different in cell (P < 0.01) and cell wall (P < 0.01) chemical constituents, nitrogen fractions (P < 0.01), total extractable tannins, total alkaloids, total glucosinolates and, hydrocyanic acid (HCN). Fresh samples of different plant parts were positive to qualitative test for cynogenic glucosides. Fermentation did not set on fresh green leaves and fruits due to presence of ANFs. Fermentative gases in vitro (IVGP) produced on oven dried twigs, leaves and pods were 11.73, 50.24 and 58.98 mL/g. Although IVGP was absent on green fruits, oven drying led to comparable IVGP and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) on naturally dried pods. IVDMD of oven dried leaves was 44% compared to 11.8 mL/g kinetic rate of IVGP, thus IVDMD was misleading its feeding value. P. juliflora leaves annihilate fermentation in rumen and extremely toxic. Green fruits after thorough sun drying or naturally dried pods of P. juliflora are only edible and suitable to feed cattle. |
