英文摘要 | The Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma) is a species of raptor distributed in Chile from Arica to Tierra del Fuego. The diet of this species in an extreme arid environment, such as the Atacama Desert, is characterized by a preference for lizards, and secondarily by rodents. Here we compare the diet of the Variable Hawk between the usual dry conditions in Atacama Desert, Chile, and a period of desert bloom following rainfall. A total of 785 pellets were collected during the dry period (February 2015) and in the desert bloom event (December 2015). The desert bloom generates an increase of the resources, which in turn influences the biological communities. Therefore we hypothesized that there would be significant differences in the abundance and frequency of prey species in the diet of the Variable Hawk between both climatic conditions, consequently affecting its trophic niche. In both environmental conditions, lizards were the most consumed prey species in similar proportions, while mammals had small variations, but these differences were not significant. The ecological niche in both conditions does not differ substantially (Morisita Index Im-h = 0.9517), which is also show by lack of differences in trophic amplitude (Standardized Shannon-Wiener index, SW st = 0.5731 in absolute desert and SW st = 0.5855 in blooming desert) as well as the similarity in the biomass contributed by the different prey species (Ellemberg Index = 94.7810). The result indicates that there are no significant differences in the diet of the Variable Hawk between absolute and blooming desert. |
