英文摘要There is growing evidence within the environmental science community that our planet has entered a potentially i-atastrophic phase of human-induced global climate warming. Climatic studies demonstrate that the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has also exhibited a warming and drying trend in recent decades. We studied an area on the Tibetan Plateau located in the transition zone between Alpine Meadow and Alpine Steppe regions. Such zones are highly sensitive to environmental change and the concomitant adjustment of vegetation in these hinterland areas of the plateau can reflect adaptation of plant ecological systems to changes in the climatic setting. In order to demonstrate whether the Alpine vegetation of the study area displays a response to changing environmental conditions, and whether the variation in the environmental conditions is reflected in changes in the physiology and forms of the Alpine floral assemblage, we studied the carbon isotopic values of these plants. Carbon isotope fractionation variations within the plants can reflect arid or moist environmental conditions attained during the growth period of the plants. We carried out a regression analysis on the experimental carbon isotope results, taking into account their geographical position. The analytical results showed that the S"C values of K. fiygmaea correlate with the changing SE-NW trend of precipitation. (R = 0. 44603, n = 29, /><()? 05), which indicates that the vegetation has adapted to variations in environmental conditions. We also surveyed floral assemblages at sites within the transition zones, and carried out principal component and cluster analyses on the vegetation indexes of these sites to identify the migration of the boundary between Alpine Steppe and Alpine Meadow caused by climate warming and drying. The migration of the boundary indicates the expansion of the arid /.one nt a rate of 14. 2 km per decade and the accompanied degeneration of vegetation in the broader central Plateau area. The spread of the Alpine Steppe has not only resulted in a drop in the overall vegetation coverage in this region, but has also caused a drop in the total biomass of the surface vegetation in the area. Study of the biomass of the Alpine Steppe and Alpine Meadow communities shows that tlu-total biomass of the Alpine Steppe community in the study area is 77 % of that of the Alpine Meadow community. Based on the observed responses of floral carbon isotopic compositions to varying environmental influences, this study has been able to quantify the changing trend of vegetation types and quality on the Tibetan Plateau during recent climate warming and drying. Through the integration of previous studies of plant ecology in the study area with our own research, we propose that the change to a warmer and dryer climatic environment is the main cause of progressive degeneration of ihe vegetation in the study area. Taking into account current climate change models, our simulations of future changing surface vegetation demonstrate that if the warming and drying trend continues unchecked, the vegetation degeneration rale will accelerate. This will not only have a negative influence on the biodiversity of the Tibetan Plateau, but the reduction of the biomass of tin-surface plants will also have a negative influence on the local pastoral economy.
