英文摘要	Atriplex halimus is a halophyte shrub, naturally growing in the Algerian steppe. Its persistent foliage is rich in protein and is grazed by cattle when grass forage is out of season. Atriplex halimus can yield up to 3 t DM/ha on degraded and high salt soils which cannot be used for growing other types of crops. This species is well adapted to arid and semi-arid climates, for fighting desertification and improving forage resources where natural vegetation is degraded or where the soil is highly saline. The traditional use of Atriplex halimus in phytotherapy by local Algerian populations (mainly as a means of lowering hyperglycaemia) is also discussed.
