Influence of the quality of water used in irrigation on the chemical properties of olive oil

A comparative study was conducted during the 2006 and 2007 crop seasons to evaluate the influence of quantity and quality of water used in the irrigation of 15-year old ’nabali muhasan’ olive trees (spacing 3 x 6 m) grown in an arid area of alhashmyia region located in the East-North of Jordan. Municipal treated wastewater and well water at an amount of 300 l/tree was applied twice monthly using drip irrigation system. Irrigation started on July 16 and continued until November 15. Rain-fed olive trees on the same farm were taken as a control. Acidity % PV, E232 and E270, sterols and some fatty acids of the obtained olive oil samples were not affected by the quantity and quality of the irrigation water. Oleic acid and total phenols decreased, while palmitic and linoleic acids increased in olive oil samples obtained from olives irrigated with well or treated wastewater (TWW) when compared to the control samples. Total phenols were also affected by the quality of irrigation water, being lower in the oils obtained from trees irrigated with TWW compared with those of the oil samples obtained from trees irrigated with well water.
