The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from Tanacetum tomentosum DC. (Asteraceae), an alpine cold desert plant collected from two different locations of the same route was analyzed by GC/MS. In all fifty eight components were identified representing 80% and 87% of the essential oil in sample 1 (full flowering stage) and sample 2 (late fruiting stage), respectively. The major components of first and second samples were 4 carene (21.0% and 4.2% respectively), artemisia triene (15.8% and 4.5% respectively), beta-bisabolene (13.6% and 50% respectively) and alpha- selinene (8.0% and 9.3 % respectively). Some differences between the minor components of the oil have also been observed. Sample 2 was rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbon that may be due to mature stage of the plant at the same time. This is the first report on the essential oil composition of this species.
