Hygroscopic and hydrophobic properties of pollution layer on outdoor insulators

The dust pollution on silicone rubber absorbs moisture at high air humidity similar to the pollutants on the glass surface or porcelain surface. This paper shows the measurements on cylindrical models of silicone rubber insulators carried out at Wroclaw University of Technology. The influence of different pollutants (kaolin, dust from Copper Works Glogow, sand from Negev desert and see brine) on the surface conductivity under high humidity conditions was studied.
