This study conducted in arid rangelands of Jaisalmer district in western Rajasthan, India, assessed the effect of root-zone soil moisture and grazing pressure on regenerative potential and fodder yields of Lasiurus sindicus (Sewan) grass. Uncontrolled grazing significantly reduced stand density of grass tussocks and their regeneration compared with sites subjected to controlled grazing or no grazing. The root-zone moisture at 0-30 and 30-60 cm depths controlled sprouting of new shoots whereas moisture at 60-90 cm depth had the greatest impact on growth of new shoots and biomass production. These findings suggest that grazing of grasslands should be controlled to allow a rest period for regeneration, if the Sewan pasturelands are to be maintained on a sustainable basis.
