Lambing with multiple births is an extremely important aspect in sheep breeding as it has direct relevance on ewe productivity and economic returns front sheep rearing profession. Keeping this in view, Garole, a prolific sheep breed of West Bengal was introduced in the institute. Their survivability at 0-3 months, 3-12 months and adult stage was 73.67, 86.36 and 90.42% respectively. The overall least-squares means of body weights at birth, weaning, 6 and 12 months of age were 1.06 +/- 0.02, 5.86 +/- 0.18, 8.97 +/- 0.30 and 13.67 +/- 0.53 kg respectively. Significant effects of season of birth, sex of lambs and type of lambing were observed on the body weights up to 9-month age only. Year of birth did not affect the body weights. The body weights of single born lambs were relatively higher than those of twins, triplets and quadruplets up to 6 month of age. The average length and height at birth were 21.18 +/- 0.22 and 26.30 +/- 0.22 cm respectively. Heart girth measured as 25.92 +/- 0.22 cm at birth. Average heart girth at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age were 46.07 +/- 0.65, 52.15 +/- 0.57, 57.44 +/- 0.89 and 61.50 +/- 1.40 cm respectively. The average paunch girth of Garole were observed as 25.90 +/- 0.25 cm at birth and 65.77 +/- 1.47 cm at 12 months of age. The survivability and growth performance in Garole sheep observed in present study conducted in semi-arid climatic region are comparable to those in its breeding tract.
