Early Pleistocene palaeosols are preserved on the upland interfluve areas of Jammu Upper Siwaliks. The clayey siltstones (Bt horizons) preserve the evidences of shrink-swell disruptions in the form of slickensides and striated b-fabrics. Illuvial accumulation of translocated clay in the form of clay coatings is well preserved. Though the fluvial processes probably led to the reworking and redistribution of some of the material, yet the pedogenic processes were active throughout as marked by the argillic soil profiles with eluvial and illuvial horizons. The field characters substantiated by the micromorphological investigations reveal warm humid to semi-arid climatic conditions for the formation of gleysols.
