Desertification has become a widely used but misunderstood term since the United Nations Conference on Desertification publicized it in 1977. Recently, a Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD) has gone into effect as the third international government agreement on environmental concerns. The convention is an activity of the United Nations. Previously, United Nations programs to combat desertification were coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme, That no longer is true.
