The Varshets and Slivnitsa sites (Bulgaria) have yielded an abundant fauna belonging to the Villafranchian period. In Varshets, where Cervidae are abundant, the Antilopinae and Caprinae are represented by Gazellospira sp. and Megalovis latifrons. The faunal complex indicates a landscape of mosaic character. In Slivnitsa, where Antilopinae and Caprinae are numerously important, G. torticornis, Pracamptoceras brivatense, Gallogoral sp. nov., Pliotragus sp. nov., Megalovis sp. nov., Hemitragus sp. nov., Ovis sp., Bovidae gen. and sp. indet. 1 & 2 are present. The first assemblage corresponds to the Saint-Vallier Unit. The second is younger, probably synchronous to the Seneze Unit (sensu Azzaroli), and its fauna is characteristic of an arid climate.
