Analyses of the data observed with JERS-1 OPS and SPOT-2 HRV over an arid zone in central Australia under a similar environmental condition indicate a good similarity in spectral reflectance. The inter-band correlation analysis of the land cover in the same area indicates high positive correlation with the highest value between band 2 and 3 of both sensors. This feature is different from that of a humid area and suggest addition of near IR band data does not necessarily improve accuracy of vegetation cover classification in an arid zone. JERS-1 SAR data analyses indicate that the data are useful for detection of small gullies or a degraded area caused by rare floods. (C) 1997 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
