Three types of Multi-Pher(R) traps and the Unitrap(R), all high capacity (non overloading), pheromone-baited, insect traps, were evaluated for monitoring pink bollworm activity in cotton. The Unitrap captured significantly more male moths than the two Multi-Pher trap designs with which it was compared. A third Multi-Pher trap design caught significantly fewer moths due to its smaller insect entry ports. capture efficiency of these high capacity traps was improved by at least five fold when they contained a piece of Pest Strip(TM) (active ingredient 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate, (DDVP)). At about 1-3 moths per trap per night, no differences in captures between the Multi-Pher No. 3 traps and the delta sticky traps were apparent. Captures in No. 3 Multi-Pher traps were noticeably greater than in the delta traps when more than five moths per trap per night were caught. As the moth activity increased to around 25-50 moths per trap per night, the magnitude of difference between captures in Multi-Pher and delta traps increased dramatically. Except for initial lower cost, delta traps have no advantage over the high capacity traps in desert southwest cotton, and high capacity traps will last many years. We suggest that cotton growers, pest control advisors, and researchers select one of the high capacity traps for daily or weekly and seasonal assessment of pink bollworm activity fluctuations and shifts.
