Middle Missouri tradition sites in Minnesota are all Initial variant manifestations. Of these, Great Oasis and Cambria, both of which are confined to the southwest prairies of Minnesota, are the best known. Initial Middle Missouri manifestations in Minnesota appear to represent in situ examples of social and interregional transformations occurring ca. AD 900, and their demise at ca. AD 1300 is associated with another regional transformation reflected in the spread of the Oneota tradition. The nature and definition of these cultures continues to be problematic due to the limited data base and earlier research focus. It is proposed that future studies of Middle Missouri sites in Minnesota examine the social and ideological aspects of the material culture assemblages in addition to the continued emphasis on subsistence and settlement studies.
