Climatic records from all around the globe are being carefully analyzed to detect spatial and temporal signals potentially related to greenhouse warming. Identification of greenhouse signals is hindered by spurious trends in the temperature records associated with urbanization, station relocations, instrument changes, and microclimatic effects. This paper shows that widespread desertification is producing an additional statistically significant warming trend in the land-based temperature records over the past century. At 11 matched pairs around the globe, areas undergoing severe desertification have an average warming trend of 4.99 x 10(-3)-degrees-C yr 1when compared to nearby areas with no desertification. These results not only reveal another non-greenhouse warming signal in the land-based temperature records, but they also suggest that any greenhouse-driven desertification may amplify regional and global warming.
