Predicting water movement on, into, and through trench caps is necessary for successful long-term containment of radioactive waste. Several computer simulation models are available for predicting water movement. Two of these models, CREAMS and ERHYM-II, were calibrated and sensitivity tested for use in cool, semiarid environments. The models were used to predict soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and runoff of two watersheds. Initial estimated soil moisture patterns from CREAMS did not fit field data well. Adjustment of the snow melt routine in the model and use of field-based wilting point data produced better concurrence with field data. The ERHYM-II model produced adequate estimates of soil moisture after adjustments of wilting point and the parameter AIRDRY. Both models adequately predicted evapotranspiration but not runoff. Both models were most sensitive to wilting point and vegetative cover.
